LeBron James had a simple response when asked about President Donald Trump’s latest criticism of him: “Must be a slow day in the office.”

The four-time NBA champion was responding after Trump publicly attacked him over his behaviour during the US national anthem before the Philadelphia 76ers’ season-opening game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Footage showed James making movements resembling a golf swing and a basketball shot while the anthem was being performed. Trump took issue with the footage, calling the NBA superstar a “TOTAL DISGRACE” in a Truth Social post and demanding that he apologise to American military personnel who died defending the country.

Trump later returned to the subject during remarks in Iowa, questioning James’ actions and describing the incident as a major scandal.

Asked about the president’s comments following Philadelphia’s home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers, James chose not to offer a lengthy defence or escalate the dispute. Instead, he delivered a brief, sarcastic response that quickly became another talking point.

The timing added another layer to an already eventful night for James. Philadelphia recovered from a 29-point deficit to beat Cleveland 114–106, with James contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The exchange also revives a long-running public tension between two of America’s most recognisable figures. Their disagreements have previously spilled onto social media, mixing sports, politics and public debates about the role of athletes in American life.

This time, James appeared content to let one line do the talking.

Trump made the criticism. LeBron supplied the punchline.
