Amorim Gets the Bragging Rights as United’s Pre-Season Ends in Defeat

Manchester United's pre-season ended with a 4–2 defeat to AC Milan, but there was still a little something for Ruben Amorim to take from the night.

Not the result.

The bragging rights.

For all the caveats that come with a friendly, Milan's comeback victory gives them the final word before the competitive season begins — and leaves Amorim with plenty to think about.

United actually started brightly.

Harry Maguire put them ahead inside two minutes before Milan responded through Samuel Chukwueze.

United restored their advantage after the break through Patrick Dorgu, but what followed was the kind of second-half collapse Amorim will not want to see once the points start counting.

Milan struck three more times through Alphadjo Cissé, Gonçalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to turn the game around and finish with a convincing 4–2 victory.

Bruno Fernandes also missed from the penalty spot.

A friendly — but not meaningless

Nobody should confuse this with a competitive fixture.

There were changes, experimentation and players still building fitness. Pre-season results rarely survive the first serious test of a campaign.

But managers still use these matches to assess readiness.

And Amorim will have seen both encouraging signs and familiar concerns.

United scored twice and showed attacking intent, but conceding four goals after taking the lead twice will inevitably raise questions about defensive organisation and game management.

Those are precisely the details that become decisive when the Premier League begins.

Milan finish stronger

For Milan, the comeback will provide confidence.

Going behind twice and still finding a way to win 4–2 demonstrates resilience, even if the context is only pre-season.

And there is a certain symmetry to the result.

United had the fast start.

Milan had the stronger finish.

In the end, the Italians leave Wrocław with the scoreline — and the bragging rights.

Amorim can reasonably argue that the result means little once the competitive season begins.

But football has a funny way of remembering these things.

4–2 will still be 4–2 when the two sides next meet.

For now, though, the real verdict on Amorim's United starts when the Premier League does.

Pre-season is over. The excuses are about to get more expensive.
