🇻🇪 Venezuela’s Transition: Washington’s Strategic Gamble
By Alain Nzeyimana | November 3, 2026
Washington is facing a difficult balancing act in Venezuela: political stability, economic recovery, and democratic accountability may not necessarily lead in the same direction.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s latest meeting with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco underscored Washington’s phased approach: stabilization, economic recovery, reconciliation, and eventually democratic transition.
But opposition leader María Corina Machado is pushing for something more immediate: elections, accountability, and the dismantling of Venezuela’s repressive political structures.
The strategic dilemma is becoming increasingly visible.
Washington appears willing to prioritize stability and economic recovery before a full democratic handover. Machado’s supporters, meanwhile, fear that an extended transition could preserve elements of the old political system under a new arrangement.
Oil interests add another layer. Venezuela’s energy resources remain central to the country’s economic recovery and to Washington’s strategic calculations.
The intelligence question is no longer simply whether Venezuela will transition. It is who will control the transition, how long it will take, and what political compromises will emerge along the way.
A prolonged transition could stabilize the country—or deepen distrust among Venezuelans demanding genuine political change.
The outcome will matter far beyond Caracas.
